Cross Crusades, Sherwood

Molly Cameron diggs deep to open a gap for the lead.

Molly Cameron (Bicycle Studio) digs deep to open a gap for the lead.

Since I can’t really race too much anymore, I’ve resigned myself to being a fan.  I’d have to say that watching cyclocross is a great time.  More screaming and beer with much less suffering.  The best thing is that I can see straight when driving home.

One a side rant, I can’t understand how this is not a bigger sport in the United States.  Short courses, crashes, the ability to close off venues and charge entry, beer, beverage and food sales etc. I know it’s growing nation wide and it seems like it’s growing exponentially here in Oregon, thanks largely to OBRA, and the Cross Crusades, but it should be HUGE!  While I’m talking about cyclocross having the potential to be a major sport, track racing really needs to blow up. Every Native American casino in the US needs a Velodrome.  The gambling and betting revenue should be attractive while fans can see every second of the race from a seat in the stadium.  Again, logistics for concession stand and ticket sales are simple.  From a business side it makes complete sense to me.

Anyway, back to Cross Crusades and Oregon cyclocross racing. The Sherwood race was a chance for me to walk around with the CycloCross Build camera for a little bit and do some very serious interviews (watch the last few minutes of the youtube video). I also got out my trusty little $100 point and shoot camera to take a few shots and some video for myself. Pat of Oregon Cycling Action posted a couple of the videos on his site.  The other 4 are below. Pat also did a write up for Velo News about the Sherwood Cross Crusade.

Men A over the barriers on the first lap

Babcock (S&M) starts to open a gap on Tonkin (KONA) as Cameron (Bicycle Studio) chases.  The next lap Babcock had a significant (about 30 seconds) lead on a Cameron / Tonkin duo.

Alice Pennington (Veloforma) through the tricky right hand corner.  As smooth as she makes this look we saw several launch themselves into the bushes on the outside.
