Bike Snob NYC

Bike Snob NYC

I came across this picture via @erichsanders and I love Bikes.  The original article, written by Jason Gay, was publish on the New York Times web site.  I love this guy, his writing, his humor, his love of bikes, and the ability to see the funny in everything possible.  Seems like the kind of guy you want to have a beer with.  Here’s a bit from the NyTimes article.

“There’s no great secret — I’m a nobody,” the Snob said, laughing. His hair was wet from rain, and he wore a brown T-shirt and blue jeans cuffed over leather bike shoes. “I’m exactly the guy I say I am in the blog. I’m a guy who rides his bike to work, is a lousy racer and thinks things are funny. That’s it.”

This little piece got me thinking of the articles that I have especially loved from the Snob.  So here we go:

Snoop Doggy Dog

Snoop Dog

1. Velospace Reaching for Stars

The Enya bike, the Snoop Dog bike, and then the one prepping for it Bris.  All classics!

Four centimeters of spacers, a stem with a generous rise, and a pair of risers flipped upside down. “Stemz up, barz down.” Awww, yeah.

2. Attrition: Worst Day Ever on a Bike

Really!?!? You’re going to pick on Mario Cipollini, Rolf Dietrich, and Craig Calfee all in one post?  How can I not love you, and your sweet, sweet words?

I won’t sicken you with the details, but let’s just say they made quick work of both Delgerbayar and his horse, and Timothy Treadwell probably went quietly in comparison. Next, the pandas turned on me.

3. New Road Bike Owners Bill of Rights

Being a racer, former bike shop guy, a current Rep for Fairwheel Bikes, and bike commuter this had me rolling on the floor.  And this one in particular goes out the Portland bike commuting community.

II) You Can Now Race Absolutely Everybody

Owning a high-end road bike means you are now part of the largest bicycle race in the world. Always remember that everybody on a road bike is engaged in a race at all times. That guy who seems to be simply spinning his legs out after a 90-mile training ride is actually attempting to lure you into complacency so that when you ride by he can pounce and beat you to the next stoplight. Don’t let that happen! Other common ploys in which wily cyclists engage include: idly chatting with another rider; stopping to fix a flat; being hit by a car; and teaching a child how to ride. If you see another rider doing any of those things, attack immediately!

That’s it, it’s all I got and every time I think of any of these articles, and so many more, I get a little giggle going on.

Thanks Bike Snob!  And by the way, we know what you bike looks like now, and that gets quicker recognition than anything else!

wow bsnyc’s bike has a baby blue powder coat? haha it’s the same color as snoop dog’s hairnet!

love the snob as much as you do, chico…and must say thanks for turning me onto his blog a few years back.

lately it seems like more and more people are reading his blog and people seem really antsy to find out who this mysterious blogger is…the lengths this guy goes to attempting to triangulate his position at an nyc crit is pretty ridick:
    http://savethelegs.com/index.php/who-is-bikesnob-nyc

but i think people should really think about the potential implications of revealing the identity of the snob before outing him….if people know what he looks like it would probably limit his ability to ride around collecting photographs and material for the site….then what the hell would i look forward to everyday?!!

Yeah it seems the Bike Snob is reaching some sort of feverish pitch of popularity. I think somebody once said “You know when you’ve made it, because some body accuses you of doping.” Well, Bike Snob, what are you on!?!?

And you know you would have found your way to his blog eventually.

yep- recent months on bsnyc he’s repeats in post after post that the fixed gear phenomenon has reached it’s pinnacle and has officially made the crossover from fringe culture to pop culture. just today he was talking about how a guy is carrying a fixie in a jc penney ad. i just hope that the death of the fixie doesn’t signal the downward spiral of bsnyc. geez- if people start riding bikes that are made to be safe and functional rather than fashionable i just don’t know what we’ll do!

yes i would have found my way to his blog- it was an occasional after work tradition at ordinary anyways…but still- i have to give you credit…
